Anti-Aging Trifecta: 3 Daily Habits to Make Yourself Feel Younger
Aging is a harsh reality of life that can’t be avoided. No matter how much money you spend or how hard you try, you aren't going to get any younger. But age isn’t the real issue. After all, it’s just a number. What people don't like about getting older are all of the associative symptoms, such as random aches and pains, stress, anxiety, and hair loss, among other things. Even though these may not be avoidable altogether, you can certainly delay their onset. Here are three daily habits you can use to feel younger. [This post contains affiliate links]
1. Shake out that yoga mat
Do you remember that one time you bought a yoga mat with the intention of practicing daily? Despite your best intentions, that mat has been collecting dust ever since. Sift through your belongings and shake out that yoga mat. What started out as a trend years ago has been shown to have myriad health benefits both physically and mentally.
Yoga can help alleviate lower back issues, joint pain, muscle fatigue, and other problems associated with aging. Reconnect with younger state of mind by reducing stress, anxiety, and even combating some symptoms of depression. Yoga may be over 5,000 years old, but you'll be feeling closer to 20 by just practicing a few times each week.
2. Practice some meditation
Although meditation seems like a mysterious activity, it has been proven to benefit the mind and body in many ways. If you want to feel younger and more vibrant, it could be as easy as sitting in silence for a few minutes each day. As we age, our minds are bombarded with more information on a constant basis. Meditation acts as a reset that clears your mind from incessant activity. Within these moments of silence and clarity, the body and mind can repair themselves.
More specifically, meditation can help you reconnect with the present moment and bring about a childlike sense of awareness. Many people also practice to control their anxiety, reduce stress levels, boost their mood, and even improve their sleeping patterns. Meditation has even shown potential for increasing an individual’s attention span and warding off age-related memory loss. Similar to yoga, meditation must be practiced routinely in order to experience these benefits.
3. Care for your gut microbiome
If you’re staring blankly at the term “gut microbiome” don’t worry. You’re not alone. This is a fancy term for the countless flora and bacteria that call your gut home. Although this sounds like a recipe for illness or an upset stomach, there is a direct connection between your overall health and the state of your gut microbiome. When everything is balanced correctly, these bacteria can help you maintain a healthy weight, ward off intestinal issues, contribute to brain function, and may even impact heart health.
It’s important to note that your gut microbiome requires some maintenance. When these bacteria are out of whack, your overall health will begin to suffer. In order to keep everything running smoothly, you need to choose the right sources of energy. Junk food and soda aren’t going to cut it. Focus on eating whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and nuts. If you have a sweet tooth, yogurt and dark chocolate are great options as well and go a long way toward improving the health of your microbiome.
Getting older isn’t something that can be paused or reversed, but some of the major symptoms that come with aging can be delayed or avoided altogether. By focusing on feeling younger, you can achieve the closest thing to immortality that humans can realize. It all boils down to your daily and weekly habits. If you lead a healthy lifestyle, you’re bound to feel younger no matter how old you are.
